QGIS
Adding the regions to QGIS, with their colours and labels
Add the layer from a URL
In QGIS, Layer ▸ Add Layer ▸ Add Vector Layer…, choose Protocol: HTTP(S), cloud, etc., and enter a URL:
https://australianantarcticdivision.github.io/measoshapes/data/v06/measo_regions06.fgb
Use FlatGeobuf (.fgb), which every recent QGIS can read. GeoParquet (.parquet) works if your QGIS build includes the GDAL Parquet driver (check Settings ▸ Options ▸ GDAL ▸ Vector Drivers). You can also download a file from the Data page and drag it onto the map.
Which file:
measo_regions06.fgb: polar equal area, for maps of the Southern Ocean and areas.measo_regions06_epsg_3031.fgb: polar stereographic (EPSG:3031), to match Quantarctica and other EPSG:3031 data.measo_regions06_ll.fgb: longitude/latitude.
QGIS reprojects layers on the fly, so any of them can be shown in a project in another projection.
Colours and labels
Download the style measo_regions06.qml, then in the layer’s Properties ▸ Symbology, choose Style ▸ Load Style… and select the file. The regions are categorized by name with the fill colours and legend labels such as “Antarctic Atlantic (AOA)”; the T regions (outside MEASO) are outlined only.
Alternatively, use the fill column directly: in Symbology, set the fill colour to Data defined override ▸ Edit… with the expression
coalesce("fill", '#00000000')
and use label for labels.
From the Python console
base = "https://australianantarcticdivision.github.io/measoshapes/data/v06"
layer = iface.addVectorLayer(f"/vsicurl/{base}/measo_regions06.fgb", "MEASO regions", "ogr")
import urllib.request, tempfile, os
qml = os.path.join(tempfile.gettempdir(), "measo_regions06.qml")
urllib.request.urlretrieve(f"{base}/measo_regions06.qml", qml)
layer.loadNamedStyle(qml)
layer.triggerRepaint()
